What Luma doesn't do

The main things that Luma Vietnam doesn’t offer is any coverage for pre-existing conditions. They are likely to exclude any pre-existing conditions. In addition, there is no coverage for motorbike accidents without a valid Vietnamese license, ability to mix & match between different family members, no claims discounts or any options for Savings Plans or Life Insurance.

Key Info

Luma Insurance Vietnam accpets new applicants who spend at least 185 days/year in South East Asia and who are in Vietnam at the time of applying. This includes expats and local citizens who are up to age 74 at the time of applying. Their policies offer guaranteed and lifetime renewability.

This means that no matter your health status or personal claims history, they must offer you a health insurance policy at your renewal date, with no age cutoffs. This is provided that you pay your health insurance renewal premium every year.

Luma Vietnam offers the choice of 3 regular coverage areas:

  • Zone A: Worldwide excl. USA
  • Zone B: Worldwide excl. USA, China, Canada, Hong Kong, Israel, Japand and Swtizerland –
  • Zone C: Worldwide excl. USA, China, Canada, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Switzerland, Russia, Singapore, Brazil, Taiwan and the UK

Zone C is very popular option for residents of Vietnam as it allows a sizeable premium savings from Zone A.

You are free to have treatments anywhere in your regular coverage area. You will have 100% coverage, without any restrictions.

Emergency Coverage Area

Under any Luma plan and coverage area, you are covered during temporary trips if you’re travelling in any of the excluded countries. For example, if you have Zone C, and are in Singapore during a holiday, you are covered for emergency hospitalizations there. However, you couldn’t choose to go to Singapore for a treatment unless you took Zone A or B.  This covers you for up to $250,000 for temporary trips up to 60 days per trip.

Luma Vietnam offers 5 plans, starting with Plan 1 and increasing in benefits offered and benefit limits as you increase to Plan 5. A quick summary of their core plans:

  • Plan 1: Inpatient only
  • Plan 2: Inpatient + Outpatient
  • Plan 3: Inpatient, Outpatient, Dental, Maternity, Vision
  • Plan 4: Same as plan 3 but higher levels of all benefits
  • Plan 5: Highest levels of all benefits

With Luma, the Dental, Maternity & Vision benefits are sold as a package, you cannot remove one individual benefit. Each member of a family policy must have the same benefits.

Luma has some great group policies that you can get starting at 4 employees. With these group policies, you have more ability to customize your health insurance plan with different modules of benefits, including inpatient, outpatient, dental/maternity/vision.

You can get pre-existing conditions covered with a Medical Health Disregarded plan starting at 10 employees. This means your employees can get pre-existing conditions covered and have waiting periods waived as well, for 100% coverage from day 1.

Luma insurance Vietnam only offers one type of application form, Full Medical Underwriting (FMU).  This means that everyone who applies must make medical declarations about their medical history and go through full underwriting process. If there are any pre-existing conditions declared, they will most likely be excluded.

Luma can cover some minor pre-existing conditions, but they lean toward exclusions as a way to control their claims ratio and continue to offer affordable premiums.  They will not accept pre-existing conditions with a premium loading.

New applications usually take 1-2 business days.

Luma Vietnam offers premium payments in USD or VND, whichever is your preference. You can pay in 3 different installments:

  • Annually
  • Semi-annually (+4%)
  • Quarterly (+8%)
Should you pay quartelry or semi-annually, you will have to proactively pay every period, there is no autocharge. You can pay with a bank transfer or you can pay online with a payment link on a card of your choice. There is a 3% fee for all cards.

Luma has an extensive direct billing network all over South East Asia, but in particular in Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia where they have local presence in each country.

You are able to get direct billing anywhere in South East Asia in their hospital network for inpatient, outpatient or dental. If you get any treatments outside of their network, then you can claim digitally for anything that’s $200 or under. For more than $200, you’ll need to submit the original documents before they reimburse. This is something Tenzing helps our clients with for free as a benefit for chosing us as your insurance agency.

Like most other regional and international providers, Luma will fully cover COVID-19 related expenses up to your policy’s benefit limits. This means if you don’t have outpatient benefits, and require some outpatient tests for COVID, then you would not be covered, unless a hospitalization was required.

They will not cover quarantine related expenses. An COVID-19 insurance certificate can be provided, just ask your Tenzing representative and we’ll obtain one for you.
