What VUMI doesn't do

The main things that VUMI doesn’t offer is coverage for pre-existing conditions, they are likely to exclude. Additionally, there are no family discounts, no claims discounts, or any ability to mix & match between different family members, or any options for Savings Plans or Life Insurance.

Key Info

VUMI health insurance accepts expats and local citizens up to age 74 across the world. VUMI offers guaranteed and lifetime renewability, meaning you can keep renewing your policy for life, as long as you continue to pay your premium at the annual date. VUMI cannot kick you off your health insurance plan at the renewal date based on your age, health status or claims history.

VUMI health insurance members in South East Asia can choose from three regular coverage areas:

  • South East Asia including Singapore (15% savings from default rates)
  • Worldwide excl. USA and Canada (default)
  • Worldwide

Most providers who offer a South East Asia plan exclude Singapore due to high medical costs, but not with VUMI health insurance.

Emergency Coverage Area

FIf you’re traveling in a country that’s excluded, VUMI provides some coverage for emergency hospitalizations during temporary trips. You’ll be covered for up to $50,000 USD for trips up to 6 weeks per trip. For example, if you took a South East Asia plan, then if you’re in Europe, you have some emergency coverage for hospitalizations only. You couldn’t choose to go to Europe to have a treatment in this example.

VUMI offers 5 Core plans levels, with escalating benefits offered and benefit limits as you increase to their most comprehensive plan, the Total plan. Here is a quick summary of the plans:

  • Basic– inpatient/evacuation
  • Standard- adds outpatient
  • Superior- adds maternity
  • Ultra- adds routine dental for minor and major dental treatments
  • Total- the highest levels of all benefits

They also offer add-ons, that you can purchase to compliment your base plan. These include

  • Wellness/Annual Checkup
  • Home Country Evacuation
  • USA coverage
  • Non-emergency evacuation

All members of a family must have the same coverage area and benefits selection.

VUMI cannot kick you off your health insurance plan at the renewal date based on your age, health status or claims history.

VUMI health insurance can consider some pre-existing conditions with a premium loading, this means that if the conditions isn’t too serious, they can accept it if you pay extra to have it covered. If the condition is too serious, then they will exclude the condition, but likely still accept you into the policy.

There is only Full Medical Underwriting (FMU) with VUMI health insurance. This means you’ll need to make specific declarations about your medical history in order to sign up and get insured.

The application processing time is usually between 2-4 business days, depending on if any pre-existing conditions were declared and need to be considered for coverage or not.

VUMI health insurance offers a variety of USD payment installments to help spread the premium out over the year, this includes:

  • Annual
  • Semi-annual (+2%)
  • Quarterly (+4%)
  • Monthly (+6%)
VUMI’s installment fees are below market norms, this is because if you’re paying with an installment, you must use a credit card. Your card will automatically be charged at the next payment date. They do not accept bank transfers for debit cards if you’re paying with an installment.
If you’re paying annually, then you can pay with an international bank transfer as well.

One of VUMI’s strengths is their partnership with Henner to access Henner’s global direct billing network. This gives all VUMI members access to one of the best direct billing networks of any provider. VUMI health insurance members can enjoy cashless direct billing at the best hospitals and clinics in Asia and beyond.

In the event you do need to pay and claim, you can submit all claims digitally for reimbursement, which is usually quite swift.

VUMI health insurance treats COVID-19 like any other illness or disease, they will cover it as long as it’s not a pre-existing condition. They will cover treatments in-line with your policy’s benefits and limitations. Any other costs for quarantine, are not covered and are an out-of-pocket expense unless you’ve been diagnosed.

If you require a COVID-19 insurance certificate, one can be provided to you, just ask your Tenzing advisor.
